FTER RECEIVING UPSETTING news about a loved one,
a group of visitors in the CHRISTUS St. Mary Hospital ICU waiting
room became so distraught that they began throwing furniture and
breaking lamps. Security was called immediately. I was the first
officer to arrive on the scene. I noticed about 12 people, all very
agitated. I was frightened for a moment and then an idea came to
mind. “OK. Let us pray,” I said in a loud, strong voice, kneeling
on the floor. The family members looked surprised. Slowly, they
all began to kneel and pray. In the meantime, a second security
officer and policeman arrived, but by this time everything was calm
and quiet. I was so amazed by the power of prayer. It was truly
a miracle moment in the way that praying brought us together as
one.
